A Randomized Controlled Trial of Resilience Training

We are currently conducting a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of Resilience Training at local Boston-area colleges called College Intervention for Resilience: A Comprehensive, Longitudinal Evaluation (CIRCLE). In this trial, college students who are experiencing very low-level symptoms of mental health conditions, who are not currently receiving any psychotropic medications or counseling, are invited to participate. Eligible students are randomly assigned to either join a Resilience Training workshop or a Life Skills Training workshop. These workshops are led by our staff and the enrolled students participate in a variety of research assessments before and after they complete the workshop. The participating students are compensated for the time that they spend doing research assessments.

Since an RCT like this one represents the most rigorous research approach for determining whether an intervention is beneficial or not, this study is a critically important component of our research program. This study is being conducted at a range of undergraduate institutions including a large urban university, a small liberal arts college, and a science and technology-focused institution.
